The Colombian Sugarcane Research Center (Cenicaña) is a private, nonprofit corporation, founded in 1977 by the Association of Sugarcane Growers of Colombia (Asocaña) in representation of the sugar agroindustry located in the Cauca River Valley.
Cenicaña carries out research programs on Varieties, Agronomy and Factory Processes, and has support services in Economic and Statistical Analyses, Information and Documentation, Computer Technology, Technical Cooperation and Technology Transfer. It provides services of lab analyses, administers the stations of the Automated Weather Network's (AWN), and continually updates the digital cartography of the cultivated area.
It finances its operations by means of direct contributions from the Carmelita, Castilla Industrial, Central Tumaco, Incauca, La Cabaña, Manuelita, María Luisa, Mayagüez, Pichichí, Providencia, Riopaila Industrial, Risaralda, Sancarlos and Sicarare sugar mills, and from its cane suppliers. It also implements projects co-financed by other entities, especially within the framework of programs coordinated by the Colombian Institute for the Development of Science and Technology “Francisco José of Caldas.”
