Remote perception

Remote perception also known as remote sensing or remote sensing is the science of acquiring, processing and interpreting images and / or data, captured from aircraft or satellites, which record the interaction between matter (sugarcane) and electromagnetic radiation (REM ).

Cenicaña research in the field of remote sensing (PR), focuses on obtaining reliable information from different remote sensors at three levels of acquisition, satellite images (Landsat, Modis), aerial images (Tetracam) and field data (spectrum radiometry) with the objective of monitoring and monitoring the sugarcane crop by measuring, analyzing and representing the spatial, spectral and radiometry dynamics of the crop. Likewise, the main lines of technological and scientific advances that allow developing and / or adapting new methodologies applied to the cultivation of sugar cane in the Cauca river valley are evaluated.

Satellite images

The geomatics area conducts studies with different types of passive (Landsat, Spot, Modis, Aster) and active remote sensors (Radarsat 2). Thanks to this, it has been possible to measure the agricultural expansion of the crop, the varietal identification, the calculation of areas planted by the different varieties and the cartographic update of several areas.

Aerial images (UAV and Spectral Cameras)

Thanks to the recent boom and technological advances in this area, the geomatics area evaluates new platforms and sensors for the realization of tasks linked to the cultivation of sugarcane. Due to this, a Mini Spectral camera of 6 lenses was acquired which has shown its efficiency in the raising of spatial and spectral information in the cultivation of sugarcane, helping to understand phenomena related to water stress and nitrogen deficiencies.

Field spectrometry

The area has an Apogee brand field spectroradiometer that records the REM between the 300 and 1000 nm. Thanks to this, it has been possible to make patterns of the spectral signatures of the sugarcane varieties produced by Cenicaña, to find differences in certain wavelengths for different maturation, fertilization or irrigation treatments.

Phenotype of the crop

The use of multispectral cameras in UAVs or platforms is a component of a non-destructive phenotyping platform, this allows capturing images of experimental ones in the field at any time and monitoring performance, instead of manually taking samples of plants, as is done in conventional plant breeding.
