Irrigation with reduced flow in sugarcane crops

This methodological guide has been prepared to support the facilitators of the Learning and Technical Assistance Program, PAT, in the process of training and managing knowledge about irrigation technology with the reduced flow method. In it, a series of practices and exercises are proposed that seek the development of the specific competences that are required in sugarcane-producing farms to establish an irrigation system with reduced flow.

In four learning units, the aspects of technology that potential users of the system must master, who are involved in the design of the installation and its operation and maintenance, are covered. Technology users, as active subjects of their own learning, integrate the different groups of PAT participants.

Units 1 and 2: Upon completion of this learning unit, participants will be in
Ability to describe the reduced flow irrigation system and the functions of its
components; identify the elements available for the installation and their materials; and apply criteria for the operation and maintenance of the system in optimal conditions.

They will also know how to carry out the reconnaissance of the environment and will have the skill to carry out the tests of advance and infiltration of the water in the furrows and the determinations of the stone content in the irrigation sites.

Units 3 and 4: through the proposed activities, participants will acquire the
ability to plan an irrigation system with reduced flow (agronomic design) and they will be competent to elaborate the hydraulic design; at the facility, they will have the skill to gauge the system and to evaluate the uniformity of the water applied in the grooves. In order to motivate participation and analysis, different learning methodologies are used, such as practices, exercises, discussions and examples derived from real situations; the purpose is to arouse interest in the training and take advantage of the experiences of those attending.

In general, the topics are treated in simple language and, when necessary, when the technical terms appear their equivalence is given in the common or commercial terms

Determination of the volume of water applied per hectare in furrow irrigation.

Cenicaña promotes the adoption of Administrative Control Irrigation in sugar cane producing farms in the valley of the Cauca River, and as part of this purpose offers training in the practices of measuring the volume of water applied per hectare.

It is estimated that it is possible to save up to 50% of the volume used in irrigation when control is carried out and technologies adapted to the conditions of the growing site are adopted. Efficient use of water is a principle of sustainability, which has benefits of an economic, environmental and social nature.
